This inviting farmhouse design results in a beautiful home with plenty of room for a growing family. The inside of the home is lovely, but so is the outside, with three distinct areas for relaxing and entertaining.
The photos shown here are from the home of Denise and Ken Williams, located just a short drive southeast of Atlanta. They have the advantage of living in a peaceful, rural area, but are close enough to a large city to enjoy all of its opportunities.
The Williamses chose this design because they wanted a big Southern farmhouse with a wraparound porch. They were moving back to Georgia to live next to Ken's son and share a business with him. A younger son still lives with them.
The wraparound front porch is a fabulous place to receive guests, chat with friends, or while away a lazy afternoon. The couple added stairs on the right side of the porch. Nostalgic shutters, graceful railings, and 16 classic columns make a tasteful combination. Two large gables sit above the porch, embellished by attractive fishscale shingles, which Ken and Denise chose to omit.
At the rear of the home, a partially covered deck makes a great spot to host a neighborhood barbecue. You can even choose whether to bask in the sun or cool off in the shade. Denise and Ken chose to omit the sunny half of the deck, keeping only the shady part.
A third outdoor area is the breezy screened porch, where you can enjoy a good book sans sunburn or insects. The Williamses chose to omit this area, with the possibility of adding it later.
If the home is built with a walk-out basement, a fourth outdoor area—a back patio—magically appears. Ken and Denise do have this patio area to enjoy.
Beyond the front door, sidelights brighten the dramatic entry, with its high, vaulted ceiling.
On the left, the quiet living room is perfect for engaging conversation with guests. Ken and Denise used a hardwood floor and a pineapple border for a warm, hospitable atmosphere.
To the right of the entry, the formal dining room hosts special meals and holiday feasts in style. Denise and Ken added an elegant stepped ceiling here, plus a hardwood floor.
Just "north" of the dining room lies a useful buffet counter. A bright laundry room is neatly closed off from view.
The gourmet kitchen boasts an island cooktop and a separate snack counter. The sunny breakfast nook hosts a handy pantry and opens directly to the screened porch.
The Williamses chose to expand the kitchen to the "south." They moved the washer and dryer and the pantry into the breezeway area, creating a new utility room. They moved the cooktop to the corner, adding a sink to the island. They also closed off the snack counter, adding more overhead cabinet space.
Denise says the kitchen, with its big central island, is her favorite feature of the home. She likes to cook and entertain their extended family often. They have hosted up to 60 people at one time!
The central gathering area of the home is the magnificent family room, with its high, vaulted ceiling. A handsome focal-point fireplace adds warmth, while French doors provide deck access. Denise and Ken enhanced the rustic, comfortable feel with a hardwood floor.
The secluded master suite is a relaxing haven after a long, busy day. A large window bay enhances the master bedroom, where the couple added a stepped ceiling and a hardwood floor. The unique private bath wraps around the bedroom in an "L" shape. A garden whirlpool tub anchors the bath, flanked by two vanities. A separate shower, a private toilet, and two sizable walk-in closets complete the posh bath.
Upstairs, a balcony bridge connects three secondary bedrooms. One of the bedrooms includes a private bath and a good-sized storage room. The other two bedrooms each have a walk-in closet and share a bath.
The three-car garage incorporates an upper-floor future area, which would make a great playroom or art studio.
Regarding future plans for the Williamses, well, the plans are already under way. Ken and Denise are finishing the walk-out basement with a second kitchen, an exercise room, and a den/family room. They also plan to add the screened porch at the back of the home, as well as a swimming pool.
When asked if they would use stock plans again to build a home, Denise replied in the affirmative. In fact, she already has another plan picked out!
