  • Most of us hop a plane in order to jet to our favorite vacation destinations. Ed Hatchett of Ellijay, Ga., however, leaves a plane in order to reach his favorite getaway—his brand-new home, Plan AX-94322.

For 17 years, Hatchett has worked as a flight attendant for a major airline; all the while, he has dreamed of one day building his own home. Perusing one of the many magazines published by Homeplans, part of Move, Hatchett eventually identified his future home. "The house plan had everything I was looking for," he says, including "porches, a basement, a drive-under garage, large bedrooms and an open kitchen." Deciding to build was simple once Hatchett had found his dream design. "And the low interest rates helped, too," he adds.

In order for the home to suit his lifestyle and his budget, though, it needed a few modifications. Hatchett opted to lower the main-floor ceiling height to eight feet, and replace the mudroom off the kitchen with a nice, roomy pantry. The snack bar was removed from the kitchen in order to open the space up to the Great Room, thereby avoiding tight traffic patterns, and Hatchett shaved a few square feet from the plan's original size.

Hatchett broke ground in November 2002, and after only a few short months, witnessed the completion of his home, in April 2003. For a reasonable $130,000, Hatchett built a 1,667-square-foot, three-bedroom home that offers two-and-a-half baths, plus several other amenities. Among his favorite features, Hatchett acknowledges particularly the back porch, which he partially screened in, and the central, stone fireplace and built-in TV niche in the Great Room. "The home is beautiful," he says. "So many people have stopped by to tell me how nicely it fits in with the wooded surroundings."

With such fantastic success and a beautiful new home, to boot, it is no wonder Hatchett's future plans include living in his home "for a long time." Though he has no immediate plans to build another home, Hatchett says he would not only use stock blueprints again, but he would also recommend them to others. And that's a message we hope travels the globe with him.
